Loving this podcast about Jesus and the Jewish Law, but stressed that it only has seven episodes. I’ll try to really stretch out the last 4 as long as I can.
Posted the first of two sermons about reading scripture: “How Does God Speak Through Scripture?”. I draw in several places on Karen Keen’s excellent 2022 book, The Word of a Humble God.
Finished reading (actually a few months ago): Lamb of the Free by Andrew Rillera 📚
I was reminded of it, though, while listening to this great interview with Rillera on the It Means What It Means podcast. The book is a great example of slowing down and reading texts deliberately rather than just tossing everything into a “sacrifice” bucket and seeing what rises to the surface.
You know it’s going to be a special day when someone at work has put Cinnamon Dolce Latte Starbucks creamer in the shared fridge…
Currently reading: Father of Faith Missions by Robert Bernard Dann 📚
Deconstructed Philly Cheesesteak really does make perfect sense for breakfast! (And it’s a great way to do brunch with my daughter for her bday.)
The interpretative footnotes in the NIV Study Bible are 🤯. About Matt 25:34-40, it says, “There is no hint of merit here, for God gives out of grace, not debt.” That may be true at the level of doctrine, but it is obviously wrong about the text at hand.

I used to think it was all about the fear that God was watching, but really Psalm 139 is such a beautiful picture of our longing to be known. And it expresses a trust that we are known.
You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.

Reading Robert Dann’s biography of Norris Groves, I am struck yet again by the essential role played by people like Bessie Paget, who live “hidden lives” but function like leaven in the dough. Thankful for them!
Why Alfrid?
Watched the third Hobbit movie with the kids tonight. The extent to which it fails to meet any of the standards set by the original trilogy is astounding.
I enjoyed the character of Alfrid more than I typically do, though. He’s just such a weird addition. It’s as if Jackson et al. were overtired when they came up with him.
